Organisation Outline:
The collection of maps, atlases, charts and early geographies in the Library, is the largest such collection in Wales. The collection deals with all kinds of
mapping including town plans, estate and farm plans and sea charts. By legal deposit the Library receives a copy of all maps commercially produced in the British Isles. This includes Ordnance Survey (OS) at all scales. OS SIMS
(Survey Information on Microfilm) is also available for the whole of the British Isles at 1:2,500 and 1:1,250 scales. The Library has a comprehensive collection of 'historic' OS maps relating to Wales from the first 'One Inch to One Miles; survey of the early nineteenth century.
There are photocopies for the counties of Wales of the original two-inch to the mile scale drawings of the OS made between 1809 and 1836 which formed the basis
of the first edition One-Inch maps. Maps of medium scale (6':1 mile) and large scale (25':1 mile) appeared in the last quarter of the nineteenth century - the
first edition published c.1870-90; second edition appeared c.1895-1905 and a third or provisional edition c.1919-1922 with a further update for some rapidly
changing urban areas c.1937. Email enquiries via on-line equiry form.
